Drawings vs. Paintings
Most people when they think of using art for decorating think of paintings rather than drawings. I'm here to go on the record that I firmly believe that there is room for both! Depending upon what you're trying to accomplish with a space, drawings can have HUGE impact. Sometimes, if used correctly, drawings can be even more powerful to a room than other forms of art ever could think of being.
That said, I'm not out to dis any of the forms of art. I think they all have their place. In fact, I did a room once in such a minimalist style that all I did was use one rather not so large piece of natural sculpture on a wall. It worked for what we were wanting to do in that room. However, drawings can also work equally as well or better and you should seriously consider using drawings in your considerable repertoire of available mediums.
Drawings & Cost
If you're on a budget, then drawings could very well be the thing for you to use. Unless you're opting for drawings that are in the collectible or historic categories and originals at that, then you're likely to save some money over other forms of art.
I don't advocate doing the same old thing in every room or space. Mix things up a bit. Drawings lend themselves to all sorts of areas both formal and informal. I've seen very formal areas with beautiful original paintings where rather inexpensive drawings lined the walls in the hallway leading to that room.
Pay attention to the frames you use for drawings. You want to select something that does not overpower the work and at the same time lends itself to tying together all the other elements of what you're attempting to do in the room. Sometimes no frame where the drawing is mounted on a hidden mat and wood frame works, too. This can save you some funds and create a good look especially if you're grouping drawings.
Ideas for Drawings
I love cartoon drawings for children's rooms. You can find lots of these kinds of drawings online nowadays. Just make sure to do business with reputable companies such as eBay just like you would do if you were shopping at a local store
For a man's study and game room, I found some awesome drawings of gruff characters drinking beer. There were a total of six of them and I grouped them in rustic wooden distressed frames that made them look old and weathered ... kinda like the men in the drawings.
Once for an outdoor sun room that had protection from weather, I found beautiful drawings of various tropical flowers. I grouped them on a wall around a large mirror that reflected the outdoors. So, you get the idea. There is just so much you can do with drawings.
